A CDL is required to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV). A CMV is any vehicle used for commerce that meets specific criteria, such as having a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 26,001 pounds or being designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.

To get a CDL, an individual must pass a knowledge test and a skills test. The specific knowledge tests depend on the CDL Class A, B, or C, or the type of endorsement being applied for. All CDL applicants must take the General Knowledge Test, however, drivers applying for the ELDT school bus endorsement for their CDL to transport students must pass this ELDT school bus endorsement knowledge test.

Once you pass the required knowledge test for this ELDT training for school bus drivers, you will be required to take the CDL skills tests. Three types of general skills will be tested: vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. You must take these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.

Note: Any vehicle that has marked or labeled components cannot be used for the Vehicle Inspection Test.

A Final Note

Competence is developed over time by implementing the knowledge acquired through a training course to on-the-job work processes.
