This Commercial Driving License (CDL) Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) – Class A course is a comprehensive program designed to equip commercial drivers with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely drive long combination vehicles in line with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the DOT regulations in 49 CFR Part 380. Participants will learn about emergency protocols, route planning, and regulatory compliance specific to handling these types of vehicles. With engaging content and practical exercises, this training ensures drivers are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of maneuvering Class A vehicles while adhering to stringent safety standards and regulations.

The complete Class A CDL Training course encompasses the following.

  • Basic operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Safe driving practices.
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance.
  • Use of electronic logging devices and other technology.
  • Hours of service regulations and fatigue management.

This CDL Class A Training is for driver-trainees seeking a CDL Class A License for the first time to drive Class A vehicles in commerce. From February 2022, the FMCSA requires entry-level drivers to complete a training program by an approved trainer before taking the knowledge test to obtain the ELDT Class A CDL.

Class A vehicle drivers do not need to receive recurrent training as the ELDT Class A Training validity for the CDL does not expire. However, once an individual’s CDL expires, generally every five years, the driver must retake the CDL Class A license training for the new CDL. Some States may require more frequent retraining or security assessments based on shorter license cycles.

Training Requirements

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV). A CMV is any vehicle used for commerce that meets specific criteria, such as having a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 26,001 pounds or being designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.

To obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), drivers must follow several steps and meet specific eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must meet the minimum age requirement set by the State.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.
  • Must pass a medical examination and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, verifying physical fitness to operate a CMV.

Step 1: Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

  • Pass the required knowledge tests to obtain a CLP.
  • With a CLP, practice driving a Class A CMV under the supervision of a qualified CDL holder.

Step 2: Complete Training and Practice

  • Complete required training programs such as this ELDT Class A Training course.
  • Gain hands-on experience driving a Class A CMV.

Step 3: Pass the CDL Knowledge Test and Skills Test

  • Take the General Knowledge Test and pass as defined in 49 CFR Part 380.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of vehicle inspection procedures.
  • Show proficiency in controlling the vehicle through various maneuvers.
  • Prove the ability to operate a Class A CMV on public roads.

Step 4: Obtain the Class A CDL

  • Once all requirements are met, apply for and receive your Class A CDL.
  • Check with your State’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or licensing agency for any additional requirements or procedures.

A Final Note

It is important to remember that attending a training course alone will not make an individual competent. Competence is developed over time by implementing the knowledge acquired through a training course to on-the-job work processes. Therefore, you must receive additional hands-on training in a Class A CMV in addition to this CDL Class A training online course.
