CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Tanker (N) Endorsement

A Tanker (N) endorsement is an added qualification on your CDL that confirms you understand how to safely operate vehicles carrying large volumes of liquid or gas. This includes loads ranging from food products such as milk and juice to fuels and industrial liquids, including gasoline, whether the tanks are permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.

You are required to hold a tanker (N) endorsement if the vehicle you operate meets the federal definition of a tank vehicle. This includes any vehicle with a single tank of 119 gallons or more, or multiple tanks with a combined capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. This requirement does not apply only to traditional tanker trucks; drivers hauling large liquid totes or IBCs on flatbeds or in dry vans may also meet this definition and need this CDL endorsement.

To obtain a CDL with a Tanker (N) Endorsement, drivers must meet the following training and testing requirements:

• Hold a valid CDL permit for the appropriate vehicle class (Class A, B, or C).
• Complete FMCSA-compliant Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) covering CDL Tanker (N) endorsement training online.
• Pass the CDL Tanker Vehicle (N) knowledge test at the state DMV.
• Comply with all federal and state-specific requirements, including age, medical certification, and driving eligibility standards.

Once these requirements are met, the driver is issued the N endorsement, authorizing the transportation of bulk tanks.

This course meets and exceeds the compliance requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the United States Department of Transportation’s (DOT) 49 CFR Part 383.

Once you complete the Tanker N Endorsement training, we will report your completion to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) through the Training Provider Registry (TPR). This ensures your training records are up to date and accessible to the FMCSA, verifying that you have met the required standards.

Validity: This CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) – Tanker (N) Endorsement certificate does not expire. However, by federal law, individuals must go through the CDL renewal process to renew the (N) endorsement on their CDL.

Renewal: Some States may require more frequent assessments based on shorter CDL renewal cycles. For instance, in the State of Florida, CDL renewals must be done every four years. Please check with your state DOT for renewal cycles.
