CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) - Tanker (N) Endorsement Course Syllabus

This CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) - Tanker (N) Endorsement consists of 2 lessons . Students are required to take each lesson in sequential order as listed below.

Lessons

Introduction

Lesson 1: Regulatory Overview

Introduces the federal regulations and safety standards that govern tank vehicle operations. Students will gain an understanding of applicable FMCSA requirements, CDL tank endorsement rules, and the driver’s legal responsibilities before operating a tank vehicle. Emphasis is placed on compliance, permit, and endorsement requirements, route considerations, and the importance of understanding how regulations are designed to reduce risk associated with liquid cargo movement.

Lesson 2: Tank Vehicles Operation and Inspection

Focuses on the safe operation and inspection of tank vehicles. Students will learn how tank design features such as bulkheads, baffles, and smooth-bore tanks affect vehicle handling and liquid surge. The lesson covers proper pre-trip inspection procedures, including checking valves, manhole covers, hoses, and emergency shutoff systems. Operational topics include safe driving techniques, surge control, curve and ramp management, and the effects of partial loads.

Final Examination

Frequently Asked Questions

A Tanker (N) endorsement is an added qualification on your CDL that confirms you understand how to safely operate vehicles carrying large volumes of liquid or gas. This includes loads ranging from food products such as milk and juice to fuels and industrial liquids, including gasoline, whether the tanks are permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.

You are required to hold a tanker (N) endorsement if the vehicle you operate meets the federal definition of a tank vehicle. This includes any vehicle with a single tank of 119 gallons or more, or multiple tanks with a combined capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. This requirement does not apply only to traditional tanker trucks; drivers hauling large liquid totes or IBCs on flatbeds or in dry vans may also meet this definition and need this CDL endorsement.

To obtain a CDL with a Tanker (N) Endorsement, drivers must meet the following training and testing requirements:

  • Hold a valid CDL permit for the appropriate vehicle class (Class A, B, or C).
  • Complete FMCSA-compliant Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) covering CDL Tanker (N) endorsement training online.
  • Pass the CDL Tanker Vehicle (N) knowledge test at the state DMV.
  • Comply with all federal and state-specific requirements, including age, medical certification, and driving eligibility standards.

Once these requirements are met, the driver is issued the N endorsement, authorizing the transportation of bulk tanks.

This course meets and exceeds the compliance requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the United States Department of Transportation’s (DOT) 49 CFR Part 383.

Once you complete the Tanker N Endorsement training, we will report your completion to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) through the Training Provider Registry (TPR). This ensures your training records are up to date and accessible to the FMCSA, verifying that you have met the required standards.

This training is important because it ensures drivers have the knowledge and skills to operate tank vehicles safely, thereby protecting drivers, the public, and the environment. It provides standardized, FMCSA-required instruction on tank vehicle dynamics, regulatory compliance, and emergency response, while also meeting federal training and security requirements necessary to obtain the N endorsement legally.
