Training Requirements

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV). A CMV is any vehicle used for commerce that meets specific criteria, such as having a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 26,001 pounds or being designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.

To obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), drivers must follow several steps and meet specific eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must meet the minimum age requirement set by the State.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.
  • Must pass a medical examination and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, verifying physical fitness to operate a CMV.

Step 1: Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

  • Pass the required knowledge tests to obtain a CLP.
  • With a CLP, practice driving a Class B CMV under the supervision of a qualified CDL holder.

Step 2: Complete Training and Practice

  • Gain hands-on experience driving a Class B CMV.

Step 3: Pass the CDL Knowledge Test and Skills Test
