The core objective of the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training program is to familiarize entry level construction workers of the range of safety and health hazards prevalent at a construction site; how to identify them; and lessen, avert, or prevent the occurrence of such hazards. The training also gives an overview about workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint.

Course Objectives

After course completion the learner will be able to:

• Explain the importance of OSHA in providing a safe and healthful workplace to workers covered by OSHA;
• Understand what personal protective equipment (PPE) is, identify the different types of PPE, and the importance of correctly using and maintaining PPE;
• Identify, describe, protect himself/herself, and recognize employer’s requirements to protect workers from struck-by, caught-in, or caught -between hazards at constructions sites;
• Recognize the hazards and safeguard against the risks of working in and around excavations and trenches;
• Identify, describe, protect himself/herself, and recognize employer’s requirements to protect workers from fall hazards, including slipping and tripping hazards;
• Distinguish between aerial and scissor lifts;
• Understand how to use ladders correctly and safely to avoid being injured;
• Understand and prevent the hazard of working on scaffolding;
• Identify the crane safety requirements for crane operators and the precautions to take when working close to cranes;
• Identify, describe, protect himself/herself, and recognize employer’s requirements to protect workers against the hazards of electrocution when working with electrical equipment;
• Use safe and secure methods to handle materials;
• Use hand and power tools safely and protect against accidents and injury;
• Understand the different methods to prevent cuts and puncture wounds, and prevent hand, wrist, and finger injuries;
• Understand what a confined space is and the hazards working in a confined space;
• Be aware of the hazards of using or working with hydrogen sulfide;
• Understand and identify key requirements of hazard communication;
• Identify the health hazards of working with asbestos, lead, and crystalline silica;
• Identify symptoms and know how to manage heat stress; and
• Understand the hazards of vector-borne diseases.
