Introduction

Lesson 1: Fundamentals of a PPE Program


This lesson defines PPE, its significance in terms of occupational safety, and its place in the Hierarchy of Controls. It covers the regulatory requirements of Cal/OSHA related to PPE, employer and employee responsibilities, hazard assessment, PPE training, and evaluation.

Lesson 2: Respiratory Protection


In this lesson, you will learn about respiratory hazards and Title 8 regulations regarding respiratory protection in California, such as Section 5144 and Wildfire Smoke Regulation in Section 5141.1. It covers the respiratory protection program, different types of respirators, assigned protection factor, selection of respirators, fit testing, medical evaluation, and emergency procedures.

Lesson 3: PPE for Head, Eyes, Face, and Ears


This lesson covers different classes of hard hats along with their correct fit, maintenance, and replacement. The lesson further elaborates upon the different types of eye and face protection as well as their selection process. It also covers the conditions requiring hearing protection under Cal/OSHA noise standards.

Lesson 4: PPE for Hands and Feet


In this lesson, students will learn about the requirements related to hand and foot protection as per Cal/OSHA regulations, Title 8 Sections 3384 and 3385. The different types of gloves and how to choose the right gloves are also discussed.

Lesson 5: Chemical Protective Clothing


This lesson covers chemical protective clothing requirements, including Title 8 Sections 3383 and 5192. The workplaces where CPC is required, CPC selection, PPE protection levels, the type of chemical breach of CPC, and heat stress during CPC use are also explained.

Lesson 6: Electrical Protective Equipment


This lesson provides information on electrical personal protective equipment and insulating protective equipment (IPE), the classes of electrical gloves with their voltage ratings, classes of hard hats, and arc-rated clothing. It also covers the Cal/OSHA requirements for inspecting and testing electrical protective equipment.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Cal/OSHA does not set a fixed period for refresher training. In accordance with Title 8 CCR 3380, each employee who is required to use PPE must be trained before the employee performs work requiring it. The employees should also be retrained in case of any change in the workplace or in the type of PPE, or in case of a lack of required knowledge or skills by the employee. Employees who use respirators must also be trained at least annually under Title 8 CCR Section 5144.

Validity: The Cal/OSHA Personal Protective Equipment Training course certificate is valid for one year.
