Angela Brown
Farm Labor Supervisor
We operate in a rural setting where wildfires and drifting smoke can pop up without much warning. This course helped me understand what my obligations are and how to train my workers. Very relevant and simple to understand.
Robert Evans
Safety Manager – Public Works
As someone responsible for several crews doing outdoor work, I found the course gave concrete steps and explained the regulations clearly. Definitely worthwhile.
Thomas White
Roadway Maintenance Manager
Smoke from nearby fires or wind-blown ash comes up unexpectedly. The module on how to respond when AQI hits unsafe levels was especially helpful.
James Rodriguez
Field Operations Manager
We have crews working outside and smoke from wildfires isn’t just about smell — it’s a health risk. This course made the regulations clear, and I walked away with a checklist I can use on site. Friendly and accessible training.

Frequently Asked Questions

All our courses are designed to take a specific amount of time. However, some students may complete this online training course much faster than others. It will take around 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete.

This Cal Wildfire Smoke Safety and Emergency Regulation is important as it:

  • Protects worker health and safety: Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) that can cause serious respiratory and cardiovascular problems for outdoor workers.
  • Ensures Cal/OSHA compliance: Meets the Title 8, Section 5141.1 training requirement for employers with outdoor or semi-outdoor workers in California.
  • Reduces legal and financial risk: Proper training minimizes violations, penalties, and workers’ compensation claims related to smoke exposure.
  • Builds workforce awareness: Helps supervisors and workers recognize air quality hazards and respond appropriately when the Air Quality Index (AQI) rises.
  • Improves emergency response: Equips teams to act quickly during wildfire events—reducing downtime and improving operational safety.
  • Supports company reputation and responsibility: Demonstrates a proactive commitment to employee health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
  • Addresses growing wildfire impacts: With California experiencing longer and more severe fire seasons each year (as reported by CAL FIRE and the EPA), this training prepares organizations to protect their people and maintain compliance.

Yes. The regulation specifically requires employers to train employees on wildfire smoke hazards, protective measures, and emergency procedures. Completing this course helps meet that requirement under Appendix B of Section 5141.1.

Cal/OSHA doesn’t assign an expiration date to this course. Employers should retrain workers whenever duties, locations, or smoke-exposure risks change, or when new controls or respirator use begins. An annual refresher each spring—around April or May— is strongly recommended to prepare for California’s peak wildfire season, which typically runs from June through October.

  • The course explains when respirators are voluntary versus required under Cal/OSHA’s wildfire smoke regulation.
  • If respirator use becomes mandatory (typically when AQI > 500), additional fit-testing and medical evaluation are required under Title 8, Section 5144 – Respiratory Protection.

Certificate of Completion: Immediately after passing the final exam, you can download, save, or print your certificate in PDF format.

Validity: The course certificate is valid for 12 months.

Renewal: Annual refresher training is considered a best practice, especially during wildfire season.
